In 1783, lava flowed across the flat land destroying a large number of farms, stopping just outside the small town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The total area of the resulting lava field is 565 km². • Be prepared that the temperature commonly varies between 40- and 60-degrees Fahrenheit on these trips, and windchill can be a factor. So good water and windproof motorcycle gear and layers is key.

  • Remember that a travel insurance is required in case you get ill or injure yourself. Check it with your insurance company or credit card company to ensure that you are covered. Do also verify coverage for medical expenses by your health insurance company.

  • Make sure to bring a bathing suit for the natural swimming pools and hot tubs. We love to get into the naturally hot geothermal water as often as possible.
